JESUS CLASSIC RESURRECTED Click this Link to view the action.
The Jesus Pro Am returned to the Gold Coast this weekend. We scored perfect waves after a long period of no waves. Thanks to the prayers of many we had clean offshore waves at Duranbah for the whole weekend. Stoked to be part of this awesome event and congrats to Ice Periera-Ryan who took out the Open Mens Division.
Jesus Pro Am Gold Coast 2010
A sudden overnight rise in swell greeted the return of iconic Gold Coast surfing competition the Jesus Classic, held at Duranbah Beach June 5-6. With flat conditions prevailing throughout the week, we made the decision to shift venues from Currumbin Alley to Duranbah, and thankful we did as we were greeted with three-foot swell Saturday morning with increasing size and improving conditions as the weekend progressed. Sunday brought on barrels ensuring a highly competitive and entertaining event for the surfers and spectators.
As the surfers were doing their thing in the water, CS crew from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast were busy on the beach setting up the hospitality tent, prayer tent, merch tent and ‘Jesus’ tent. It wasn’t long before homemade cakes and coffee and tea were flowing out into the crowd for all to enjoy. Volunteers came from neighboring churches to serve the spectators and the success Pro Am would not have been possible without their help.
With the Pro Am well underway everyone enjoyed invigorating commentary provided by JC Epidemic and the random Optus penguins gracing the beach and getting flogged by frothing groms desperate for a mobile phone. Live streaming was up and running with spectators watching from around Australia and even Brazil. Surfing Qld provided computer judging, which was an all-around bonus. There was no shortage of spectacular action in the water to keep the crowd entertained with the JC Epidemic Air show expression session. Oney Anwar (Coolangatta, QLD) walked away with $300 cash for completing a huge, clean air reverse. Prizes were also awarded to Dru Adler for the best-attempted aerial as he nearly landed a massive Passion Pop and Angie Koops was also recognized for her forehand aerial prowess.
And the moment we have all been waiting for…..the Open Men’s Final Showdown! Coolangatta local Ice Pereira-Ryan vs. Coolangatta local Yerin Brown in the man on man format. Yerin bolted out of the gates in the first five minutes of the final with two excellent scores, finding clear green barrels and performing committed turns that resulted in a combined wave total of 14.67. Ice, not to be outdone, soon followed with a deep barrel, busting out through the chandelier opening and throwing buckets of spray on the final section of the wave, the judges rewarding him with an 8.67. With only five minutes to go in the final, Ice backed up his earlier score with another 7.87 that combined a deep barrel and huge carving turns that proved enough to take the lead. Then, with only minutes on the clock he consolidated his lead with a combination of turns and a superman aerial maneuver that set the crowd alight, scoring an 8.77. Ice, deservedly walking away with the $1000 cash and Nokia mobile phone provided by Network Communications.
The 26th Jesus Pro Am Series was warmly welcomed back to the Gold Coast after a 17-year absence. Those with fond memories of the Jesus Classic, as it was formerly known throughout the 80’s and early 90’s, were not disappointed with the revamped version of this historic competition. This competition was truly more than we had asked or imagined and there was no doubt that the hand of God was all over this. Many thanks to all the sponsors and partners of the Jesus Pro Am Gold Coast: Network Communications, Coastalwatch, Surfing QLD, Surfing World, the Bible Society, Tracks, Future Fins, Movemedvd, Misfit Surfboards, JC Epidemic, LineUp, Black Stump, Wallace Bishop Jewellers.
